Shadow Friend Poem

When my shadow was my friend

by James Bond

When my shadow was my friend,

light was our bond,

shade his feast,

darkness his frightful playground.

but not so scary it was

with such large a beast.

My shadow was my friend.

My thoughts: I mean it’s a little cliché, but I think all poems sound a bit pretentious. Though I really like the line “when my shadow was my friend”. What I like about this poem is that I can explain every line. I think the poem should be longer and maybe dive into the after, like when shadow stopped being friends with this person. Opinions?

Besides that, I’m becoming more appreciative of the poem unit my fiction writing class. Some of the poems are really cool and interesting. I almost always prefer the ones that are closer to prose and tell a more meaningful story, but any of the poems from class are miles better than the ones from high school. The Raven can suck my ass.
